Karanji Lake, Mysore

Karanji lake is a beautiful bird sanctuary in the heart of city, built by the Mysore maharaja more than a century back. It provides a wonderful habitat for more than 70 different species of avifauna. You can easily spot on the fringes of the lake ducklings, darters and during the winter season, pelicans, painted storks, spoon bills , to name a few. The lake is the site for the largest walk through aviary in India, which is quite popular among visitors, especially avid birdwatchers. The birds are almost at touching distance as one takes a stroll on the walkway. Other attractions of the lake include a butterfly park (housing a large variety of plant species to attract butterflies), children's corner and boating facilities.

The butterfly park is inside an island in the lake. The path through the park eventually takes you to that bridge to the island. This is home to about 4 dozen butterfly species. What attract the butterflies are the select plants that is grown in the island. Unlike the birds, it is a bit difficult to spot the many varieties of the butterflies.
A beautiful place for nature and bird lovers, come here to enjoy nature at its very best.
