Ranthambore Fort History
The word ‘Ranthambore’ is a corrupted form of ‘Ran-Stambha-Pura’ meaning ‘City of a Battle Tower’. Historians believe that this castle in Rajasthan is more than 1000 years old and was occupied by several dynasties.
Ranthambore Fort was first under the possession of Chauhans and later went to Sisodiyas and then Mughals. Until the mid-20th century, Ranthambore was the private hunting ground of the Raja of Jaipur.

Located 700 feet above the sea level, Ranthambore Fort sits atop the Vindhya hills and encloses several old buildings. After climbing 600 steps, when you enter this fort, you will first find a massive gate followed by several palaces, secret rooms and temples.
There is also a small pond by a ruined palace which has an interesting history. Locals say that a Rajput princess jumped into this pond when she heard that her father had lost a battle.

You can reach this fort easily from Delhi by cab or train. If you prefer a road journey, then the drive time from Delhi is 6 hours 46 minutes or 374 km.
Since many people come to Ranthambore by train, they get off at Sawai Madhopur which is hardly 26 minutes or 11 km from the fort.
If you are coming from Jaipur, the drive time to Ranthambore Fort is approximately 4 hours or180 km.
