About Mata Vaishno Devi Temple

The Legend of Vaishno Devi
Long ago, three powerful Goddesses created a divine child. She was born in the house of a man named Ratnakar. This special girl wanted to find God in the forest.
A disciple named Bhairon Nath began troubling the young Vaishnavi. He followed her everywhere and disturbed her prayers. To escape him, she ran into the Trikuta mountains.
While running, Vaishnavi shot an arrow into the ground. Water gushed out immediately forming the Banganga stream. Her footprints can still be seen at Charan Paduka rock.
She hid inside a cave called Garbh Joon for nine months. Bhairon Nath finally found her there after searching everywhere. The Goddess then created a new cave opening with her trident.
At the main cave, Mata took the fierce form of Maha Kali. She defeated Bhairon Nath to protect righteousness. Before dying, he received forgiveness and became a guardian spirit.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Delhi to Jammu

Day 3: Darshan and Return to Katra

Day 4: Katra to Delhi

Important Stops During Yatra
Banganga Temple (3 km from Katra)

Charan Paduka (4.5 km from Katra)
Mata's footprints are visible on a rock here. She rested at this spot while escaping Bhairon Nath. People touch the footprints and seek blessings. It's 3,380 feet above sea level.
Ardh Kuwari (6 km from Katra)
This is the halfway point during your climb. The Goddess hid in this cave for nine months. You crawl through the narrow 15-foot-long Garbh Joon cave. Many pilgrims rest here overnight before continuing.
Hathi Matha Ascent
After Ardh Kuwari, the path becomes very steep. The mountain shape looks like an elephant's forehead. Take your time climbing these steps carefully and steadily.
Bhairon Temple
Located 2.5 kilometers beyond the main cave at 6,700 feet height. Visiting this temple after Mata's darshan completes the yatra. Bhairon Nath's spirit protects devotees who come here.
