India Gate Delhi – Overview

Right in the heart of New Delhi stands a tall and proud monument that most Indians have seen at least in pictures. India Gate is 42 metres high and is one of the most visited landmarks in the country. It was built to remember and honour the 70,000 Indian soldiers who gave their lives fighting for the British Army during the First World War. Much like the famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris, India Gate is an arch made of sandstone that tells a story of bravery and sacrifice.

The monument is officially known as the Delhi War Memorial. It was designed by the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, who also helped plan the city of New Delhi. Standing on Rajpath (now called Kartavya Path), India Gate faces east and is surrounded by beautiful green lawns and small ponds.

History of India Gate

India Gate was built between 1921 and 1931. The foundation stone was laid in 1921 by the Duke of Connaught, and it was finally inaugurated in 1931 by the Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin.

After India became independent, the monument took on new meaning. On 26 January 1972, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi lit a flame at the base of India Gate called the Amar Jawan Jyoti, meaning "The Flame of the Immortal Soldier." This eternal flame was lit in memory of the Indian soldiers who died in the 1971 Indo-Pak War. The flame burned for nearly 50 years before being merged with the National War Memorial flame in January 2022.

Today, India Gate has the names of over 13,000 soldiers carved on its walls. These are real people who fought and died bravely. Visiting India Gate is a powerful reminder of their courage.

Amar Jawan Jyoti – The Eternal Flame

One of the most moving parts of visiting India Gate is seeing the Amar Jawan Jyoti. At the base of the arch, there is a structure made of black marble. On it sits an L1A1 self-loading rifle with a war helmet on top. The word "AMAR JAWAN" meaning "Immortal Soldier" is written on all four sides in gold.

Four urns fuelled by CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) surround the marble installation and burn continuously. This eternal flame has become a deeply emotional symbol of India's respect for its fallen soldiers. In January 2022, this flame was merged with the flame at the National War Memorial, which is located just behind India Gate.

The Canopy Near India Gate

You will notice an empty canopy standing near India Gate. This sandstone canopy once held a marble statue of King George V. After Indian independence, the statue was removed and shifted to Coronation Park in North Delhi. The canopy has remained empty since then and is also a part of Sir Edwin Lutyens' original design.
