Taj Mahal - The Beauty Personified

The Taj is one of the seven wonders of the world. It is also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located on the banks of Yamuna River in Agra, it was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal represents the finest architectural achievement in Indo-Islamic architecture. You will be mesmerized by the pathway beside the pool with fountains up to the mausoleum built with pure white marbles and semi-precious stones. The construction of the Taj Mahal (spread across 42 acres of area) was completed in approximately 22 years and it took 20,000 artisans along with architects to complete the project.

The beauty of the Taj can be witnessed when it displays different shades during different hours of the day, such as pinkish in the morning, white in the evening, and golden when the moon shines. Best Time to Visit Taj Mahal

To escape from the scorching heat or excess rainfall, it is suggested to visit the Taj Mahal from November to March. 

Timings to Visit Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. 

Note: Taj Mahal is closed on Friday for general viewing.

Entry Tickets for Taj Mahal

You can buy tickets from the entry gate ticket counter. There are separate queues and prices for foreign tourists and domestic tourists.

  • For Foreign Tourists- Rs 1100 + 200 (Additional if you want to visit mausoleum)
  • For Citizens of SAARC and BIMSTEC countries- Rs 540 + 200 (Additional if you want to visit mausoleum)
  • For Domestic or Indians- Rs 50 + 200 (Additional if you want to visit mausoleum)

Note: No entry ticket for children below the age of15 years (both domestic and foreigner)

You can also buy Taj tickets online. For domestic tourists, there is a discount of Rs 5 per Indian ticket and Rs 50 per foreign ticket.

NIGHT VIEWING

Watching the Taj Mahal during full moon nights is the beauty beyond words. It is a unique experience in the world. Night viewing is available for 5 days in a month, is on full moon night, 2 nights before, and 2 nights after the full moon. However, night viewing is closed every Friday and in the month of Ramzan.

TAJ MAHOTSAV

Taj Mahotsav is the most vibrant and eagerly awaited festival celebrated in the month of February at Shilpgram, near the eastern gate of Taj Mahal. It is a 10-day long festival that showcases India's rich crafts, arts, cultures, cuisines, dance, and music. The objective of this festival is to promote Indian art and artisans. Large number of tourists across the world join this festival every year and are fascinated by the magnificent work of art which are available at very reasonable prices.

You can see the exquisite craftwork by approximately 400 artisans from all over India, such as wood/stone carvings, bamboo work, paper mash work, brass wares, silk and zari work, Kashmiri shawls and carpets, hand printings, and much more. Apart from this, you will experience the magnetic performances by the artists on classical music, folk dance. This festival also exhibits mouth-watering cuisines to pamper your taste buds.

KALAKRITI SHOW    

Kalakriti is a live musical drama held at a cultural and convention center near the Taj Mahal. The show presents the story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal and also the lifestyle of the Mughal dynasty. The purpose of the show is to maintain the cultural and historical heritage of India. It also has an exclusive handicrafts showroom where tourists can purchase items made of wood, metal, marble, and thread.

TAJ MAHAL GARDEN

The Taj Garden is not just an ordinary garden but a lush green meadow that is well-planned and well-maintained. The garden is divided into four parts and each part has four flowerbeds. Therefore, it is also known as Charbagh as every aspect of the garden is the multiple of four. Each flowerbed has 400 plants and fruit-bearing trees. All trees are planted in a symmetrical manner to enhance the beauty of the monument. 

The garden has two canals made with marbles and a fountain in the center. The garden also has four pathways and a lotus tank made with marble. All pathways are distinct in features and can be easily viewed from a mausoleum.
