Surya Kund near the Yamunotri temple is called so, because Yamuna is the mythological offspring of Surya or Sun, located half an hour distance from gangotri.
Surya Kund is the site of hot water spring at Yamunotri temple, Pilgrims take a holy dip in Surya Kund in steaming hot water,cooled to comfort for bath. It is believed that bath at this holy site showers blessings of God for one's wellbeing.
It is more of a community bath of pilgrims,rather an organised pleasure bath for tourists' frolic, therefore an ordinary looking affair. Only significance is faith with which pilgrims come here and take a dip with belive of seeking God's blessings.
A small quanity of rice tied loosely in cloth are dipped in the surya kund. After few minutes the rice will be cooked which is taken as Prasad. The water is pipping hot and is really amazing.
