Delhi and Jaipur: A 3-Day Trip India

Day 1 – Delhi Sightseeing: Where History Comes Alive

Delhi is not just a city — it's a living museum. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveller, the sheer scale of history packed into this capital will leave you speechless. Here's how to make the most of your Delhi sightseeing day.

  1. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib — Start your morning with a visit to the most prominent Sikh Gurdwara in Delhi. The peaceful golden dome, the sacred sarovar (holy pond), and the calming atmosphere make it the perfect place to begin your journey.
  2. Chandni Chowk — Step into Old Delhi's most iconic market, one of Asia's oldest and busiest bazaars. Hop onto a cycle rickshaw and let it weave through narrow lanes bursting with colour, food stalls, and centuries of stories. Walk through the old trails and breathe in the real essence of Delhi — chaotic, charming, and completely unforgettable.
  3. Jama Masjid — Just a short walk away stands the largest mosque in Old Delhi, built during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. The grand courtyard can hold up to 25,000 worshippers. Standing here, you'll understand why Shah Jahan was obsessed with building things that took your breath away.
  4. Red Fort (Lal Qila) — Another masterpiece by Shah Jahan, built between 1639 and 1648. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is packed with imperial history and gives you a real sense of the power of the Mughal Empire.
  5. Humayun's Tomb — Built in the 16th century by Queen Haji Begum, this stunning garden tomb is widely believed to be the prototype for the Taj Mahal in Agra. Walk around the symmetrical gardens and you'll immediately see the resemblance.
  6. Raj Ghat — A simple, dignified square platform of black marble, Raj Ghat is where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. This quiet spot is where Indians come to pay homage to the Father of the Nation and the country's greatest freedom fighters.
  7. Qutab Minar — Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, this towering minaret is one of the finest examples of Afghan architecture in the world. Its story begins in the twelfth century with Qutubuddin Aibak — and over 800 years later, it still stands tall.
  8. India Gate — End your evening at this iconic memorial — a grand archway standing in the middle of a crossroad, much like Paris's Arc de Triomphe. It honours the 70,000 Indian soldiers who laid down their lives fighting during World War I. At night, when it's lit up, it's truly a sight to behold.

Day 2 – Delhi to Jaipur: The Pink City Awaits

Start the day early — you've got a scenic 5.5-hour drive ahead of you from Delhi to Jaipur. The highway is dotted with dhabas (roadside stalls) where you can stop for a hot breakfast and a steaming cup of chai. It's all part of the experience!

Once you arrive in Jaipur, the excitement starts immediately.

  1. Hawa Mahal — Your first stop is this iconic five-storey pink sandstone structure, built in 1799 by the poet-king Sawai Pratap Singh. The name literally means "Palace of Winds" — it was designed to let cool breezes flow through its hundreds of small windows. You don't need to go inside to appreciate it; the view from the road alone is stunning and makes for some brilliant photos. It remains one of the most recognisable landmarks in all of Jaipur.
  2. City Palace — Next up is one of the finest historic architectural gems in Rajasthan. The City Palace is a beautiful blend of Mughal, Rajput, and even European architectural styles, and it was once the official residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. Within the complex, you'll find the Mubarak Mahal, the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), the Clock Tower, and a fascinating museum. The museum is arguably the most interesting part, with exhibits that take you straight back into the royal era.

After a packed day of exploration, head back to your hotel in Jaipur for a well-earned rest.

Day 3 – Amer Fort & Drive Back to Delhi

After a relaxed breakfast, it's time to visit the crown jewel of Jaipur.

  1. Amer Fort (Amber Fort) — Located about 11 kilometres from Jaipur, Amer Fort is the most significant sight in the entire city — and honestly, one of the most spectacular forts in India. Built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh, this majestic structure is crafted from red sandstone and white marble, set dramatically against the Aravalli Hills with the shimmering Maotha Lake adding to its charm.

Enter through the Sun Gate, known locally as Suraj Pol, and before you step inside the main palace, pause at the Sila Devi Temple right at the entrance. Inside the fort, the highlights include the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), the incredibly beautiful Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) — where thousands of tiny mirrors reflect candlelight across the entire ceiling — and the cool, peaceful Sukh Mahal.

Give yourself at least four hours to explore the entire fort; there's genuinely that much to see.

After soaking in the grandeur of Amer Fort, it's time to begin the drive back to Delhi, carrying with you memories of markets, mausoleums, mosques, and maharajas.
