Smithsonian’s National Zoo — Washington, D.C. Zoo Ticket, hours and prices

When travelling to Washington with family or friends, remember to visit the National Zoo of Washington, a known Smithsonian. Visiting a national zoo with family or friends is also essential if you travel or live in a particular place. For a human being’s connection with nature, it is about knowing the beautiful creation of God.

In this blog post, you will learn about the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington and human beings’ connection with natural creatures, which you cannot imagine.

Why is it essential to visit the National Zoo?

Visiting the zoo, you will get an education and morale: entertainment and science research. Human beings can learn how animals live their life and what their eating habits are. In the national zoo, the people working there take care of animals or other creatures. Nature creatures get their personal space in the zoo. Government officers inspect national zoos around the world.

If you visit the National Zoo with your kids, they will learn how beautiful nature is. Humans have enough space in this world to live and do whatever they want, but the creatures have only certain places to live or do activities. Government officers create an environment according to species’ needs.

What is unique about the Smithsonian National Zoo?

This National Zoological Park is the oldest zoo in the United States, founded in 1889. One part of the zoo is given to the Smithsonian Institution. The institution does not charge admission fees; it aims to educate all the children about wildlife and their habits. The campus is divided into two parts and has 180 species of trees, 850 species of woody shrubs and plants, 40 species of grasses, 36 species of bamboo, and 1500 animals of 390 species. Know how to explore the different trails and habitats that showcase diverse species from around the world.

Diverse Species of Trails and Habitats of the World

Africa trial If you want to know Africa’s most desired animals, this place is for you. They have kept Addax, Cheetah, Hartmaan’s Mountain Zebra, Ostrich, and more in this zoo. In this institution, people study animal behaviour, breeding and health. The entry timing is 8:00 am to 6:00 pm in the summer, and in winter, the timing would be 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
AmazoniaThe zoo provides its animals with enrichment—physically and mentally stimulating toys, activities, social groups and environments. At Amazonia, enclosures were designed to mimic a tropical rainforest where dozens of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians move freely throughout the exhibit. The timing is the same as the Africa Trial. Many species include turtles, sting rays, poison dart frogs, arapaima, titi monkeys and roseate spoonbills.
American BisonAmerican Bison is a rare animal kept in zoos. Bison are wild animals; keepers spread food and boxes to engage them. Visitors can see a glimpse of Bison wallowing in the grass and mud, a behaviour that helps them keep cool.
American TrialAmerican Trial is where you can see bird and water species. Visitors can learn about grey seals, harbour seals, bald eagles, grey wolves, brown pelicans and beavers. This also features river otters, ravens and an incredible underwater view of the Zoo’s California sea lions.

What needs to be kept in mind before entering the Zoo?

It’s imperative to keep the following things in mind before going to the Zoo.

  • Creatures in zoos deserve respect as human beings. Do not speak loudly or make noise; sudden movement can cause stress to animals. Respect their space and behaviour.
  • Follow all the safety guidelines. This is mandatory for animal well-being and the safety of human beings.
  • Do not try to give something to animals; humans are most dangerous to animals. Zoo keepers know what animals’ food and time is.
  • Stick to the designated path; do not climb barriers or enter a restricted area. An animal can attack if they see any unusual activity.
  • Stay hydrated; the Zoo is in a large area. You might walk a lot, so wear comfortable clothes and footwear, especially in the summer.
  • Please take advantage of learning something from zoos; their sections can help you to communicate with animals.
  • Maintain the zoo decorum; do not throw garbage anywhere. Dispose of trash can be conscious of the animal environment.
  • If you are going with your children, take care of your children. It’s important to behave appropriately in zoos.

What are the Entry Timings & Charges?

  • The zoo ground timing is 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, and it opens every day except 25 December.
