There have been legends and stories that time has seen, but few surpass the enormity of the story of Rani Padmini. It is said such was her beauty and so translucent was her skin, that everything she swallowed could be seen going down her throat. Hearing of such tales and anecdotes about the beauty of this woman, Ala Uddin Khijli was drawn to Chittorgarh.
The only problem was the Rajputana code of honour did not allow women to show their face to men other than their husbands. However, Rana Ratan Singh agreed to let Ala Uddin Khilji to witness the reflection of his wife through a mirror.
Such was her charm that Ala Uddin Khilji lost himself to the obsession of possessing her and as a result, the whole Chittorgarh Fort was destroyed in the siege of 1303.
