Chandigarh – A City of Unparalleled Beauty
Le Corbusier, the French Architect has to be credited for the existence of a superb city like Chandigarh. It is a marvel of urban planning, blending environmental preservation with a modern mindset. The architecture and city landscape is outstanding, while the quality of life that exists here exists nowhere else in India. In short, Chandigarh, the capital of two States, Punjab and Haryana, is prosperous, green, serene, and spic and span.
As for sightseeing, you can never get enough of it in this best-planned Indian city. The Rock Garden is a novel experience indeed. Constructed by Nek Chand in 1957, a former road inspector with an active imagination, the garden displays glorious sculptures designed from chinaware, broken glass bangles, clay, terracotta, non-functioning fluorescent tubes and coal. There are mazes, canyons, waterfalls, puddles, statues, etc, constructed from natural materials. It will leave you awed and amazed!
The Rose Garden, just 1 km away from the city centre, is another attraction that should not be missed. You will literally drown in the fragrance of the varieties of exotic roses around you. That is not all. You will have to hobnob with 825 different kinds of flowers, 32,000 types of trees and medical plants too. If you are a nature lover, you will be glad to know that there are several other well-maintained gardens, mini-forests, lakes and parks too.
Amongst the museums exhibiting all kinds of relics, paintings, artefacts, etc, the National Gallery of Portraits is the most renowned. You may learn everything you wanted to know about India’s freedom struggle by going through rare documents, looking at the portraits and listening to the recorded voices of India’s past leaders, over here.
Spend some days in this lovely city, if you wish to forget the world you left behind. Take back memories of a vacation well spent.
